Making a birthday cake – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Birthday’s come once a year and the kids usually require a favourite character or theme. This year we have used our chocolate sponge cake recipe to create a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cake.

The character on show is Raphael and it was pretty easy to make.

Method

The biggest tip really is to make the cake the night before and put it in the fridge. This helps make the cake a bit firmer, which is ideal as you’ll need to cut and shape it. In this instance we looked up a picture and shaped the face to look like the turtle. You can’t see it in the picture, but we also cut a small layer out on top, so that the eyes and bandana are sunk lower than the nose and mouth.

Once you have cut away the shape, it’s then simply a case of covering the cake in green icing and then placing a bandana shaped piece of icing over the top. We didn’t cut away from the eyes, but instead add a thin layer of white on top of the red bandana. We also did the same for the mouth, before surrounding the features in black icing to make them stand out.

Like I say, it was quite simple really, but it does look as impressive as anything bought in a shop and it tastes much better too.
